Guidelines: Debate Competition


ATENEO DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP 2014

SCHEDULE: December 1 (Orientation)
          December 3 (Elimination Rounds)
          December 3 (Quarter-Final & Semi-Final Rounds)
          December 4 (Grand Finals)

DEBATE FORMAT: British Parliamentary Format


1. Each participating unit is allowed to field in up to a maximum of three (3) teams. Members of the team should be dully-enrolled students of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University for the second semester of the current school year.

2. Each participating unit is required to field in one (1) adjudicator. Representation in the adjudication pool is obligatory. The adjudicator may not necessarily be a member of the Ateneo Debate Union (ADU) or the Ateneo Debate Congress (ADC).

3. There shall be no substitution of speakers in any of the debate rounds.

4. Members of Ateneo Debate Union shall not be allowed to join.

5. For debaters from the Graduate, Medical and Law Schools, they must have not won the championship or scored a place in the Top 10 Best Speakers/Adjudicators of the Mindanao (MPDC), Visayas-Mindanao (VMDC) and National (NPDC) Parliamentary Debate Championships during their collegiate period.

6. The use of cellular phones and other electronic gadgets are highly prohibited in the duration of the debate.

7. Teams should be in their respective rooms within five (5) minutes of the schedule’s starting time for a particular debate round. Otherwise, the opposing (present) team shall win by default.

8. Team members are not allowed to communicate with any other person (including indirect communication using mobile devices) outside their team during the preparation time prior to each debate round. Any team found violating this particular rule shall be disqualified.

9. The decision of the adjudication panel shall be deemed final and beyond appeal.

10.         Proper decorum is expected from all the debaters.

MECHANICS:

1. There will be four (4) episodes of debate in the Elimination Rounds.

2. The Quarter-Final and Semi-Final Rounds shall adopt the knockout system while match-ups in the Elimination Rounds shall be determined using power-matching (except for the first round).

POINT ALLOCATION:
  • 20 points = First
  • 10 points = Second
  •  7 points = Third
  •  4 points = Fourth
  •  3 points = Fifth
